Football season is here and fans are preparing to see if their favorite team makes it to the big stage – the Super Bowl.

While you’re brushing off your jerseys, making sure your recliner is situated perfectly in front of the TV and stocking up on snacks and drinks, here are a few random football facts for basic knowledge or to impress your friends with your wisdom as your cheer on your team.

1.Although Vince Lombardi is noted for saying “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing!”, actually College Football Hall of Fame head coach Henry Russell “Red” Sanders coined the expression a few years prior to Lombardi in Sports Illustrated.

2. The Super Bowl is also the game most commonly coined as “Namath’s Guarantee” where New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath, before the game, guaranteed that the Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts.

3. Deion Sanders is the only person to hit a Major League Baseball home run and an National Football League touchdown in the same week. He’s also the only person to play in the World Series and the Super Bowl.

4. Charles Follis became the first Black professional football player in 1904. Willie Thrower was the first African-American quarterback in the NFL.

5. It takes about 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year’s supply of footballs.
6. The Vince Lombardi Trophy is made of sterling silver, stands 20.75 inches tall, weighs 107.3 ounces and is valued in excess of $25,000.
7. The Washington Redskins were the last segregated team in the NFL.

8. Miami has hosted the most Super Bowls so far at 10 with the most recent between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints in the 2010 Super Bowl.

9. With almost $1 billion in yearly revenues, the NFL is the world’s richest professional sports league.

10. The “G” on the Green Bay Packers’ helmet does not stand for “Green Bay.” It stands for “greatness.”
